Watercolor on paper, framed. Featuring a suprematic expressionist abstract composition. Signed with monogram and attr. Ilya Chashnik (Russian, 1902-1929) on the lower margin. 24 x 19 cm (9.4 x 7.5 inches), frame: 45.5 x 35.5 cm (17.9 x 14 inches). Ilya Chashnik was a suprematist artist, a pupil of Kazimir Malevich and a founding member of the UNOVIS school. Chashnik was notably able in a variety of media. Aleksandra Semenovna Shatskikh describes him as "famous for his inexhaustible inventiveness and ability to apply Suprematist principles to virtually all forms of art, including easel painting." He painted, was proficient in metalwork, and designed ceramics produced at the Imperial Porcelain Factory (then known as the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory). The University of Texas at Austin held an exhibition dedicated to his works in 1981. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
