(18.9 x 28.3 cm) 1931 PROVENANCE Allen Frumkin/Carole Ehlers, CHICAGO Private Collection, NEW YORK Ilse Bing was among the numerous talented photographers to converge on Paris from central and eastern Europe during the twenties and thirties. She came from Germany in 1930 and contributed to many important magazines of the period, including ARTS ET MÉTIERS PHOTOGRAPHIQUES, VU, and HARPER'S BAZAAR. She also participated in many of the most significant exhibitions of the decade: at Julien Levy's gallery in New York in 1932; at the Pavillon Marsan in Paris in 1936; and in Beaumont Newhall's first history of photography exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1937. After being imprisoned in 1940 and 1941, she obtained a visa to emigrate to the United States. During her early days in Paris, she wandered the city and, wherever she traveled, photographed little details that most passersby would not notice, such as this intriguing composition of interwoven mooring ropes, their shadows, and reflections. Such abstract pictures earned her a place in the vibrant Paris photographic community and its special brand of "New Vision" photography.
