IL. Nauvoo. Nauvoo Manufacturing Co. $100. 18__. (Unlisted in Rust). Proof on India paper mounted on card. $100 Post Note. Beehive, center; eagle with ribbon in beak "STATE SOVEREIGNTY NATIONAL UNION", shield, olive branch, arrows, left; Liberty standing with spear and shield, right. While we have no definitive information on the history of this particular institution, the overall style of the note, the printer, the location, and the choice of a beehive as a central vignette all point convincingly to a strong Mormon connection. DSH / SHD. Fine, there are tears where pieces have come off the heavy paper that the note is mounted on, but no pieces are missing.
Although there were still members of the Mormon Church in Kirtland, Ohio, the majority of them had moved in 1832 to western Missouri and established several communities in Jackson County. Religious persecution and mob violence forced an estimated 15,000 Mormons to flee from Missouri in 1839, leaving behind homes and property.
Assisting one another, these Church members crossed the Mississippi River in 1839 and settled in Commerce, Illinois. Commerce was later renamed Nauvoo. Nauvoo became the headquarters of the Mormon Church, and members moved there from Kirtland. By 1844, the population of Nauvoo had increased to twenty thousand.
