1884-This watch is an open-face, open-back Elgin mechanism in a Hamilton case, size 18. The front bezel and crystal pop off, and the dial is single-sunk white enamel. The hour chapter is marked in black roman numerals, and the seconds dial is marked in black arabic numerals in 10 second intervals. The center of the dial reads "Elgin Nat`l Watch Co." and the hands are all blued. The seconds hand is a closed moon style, and the hour and minute hands are a diamond/spade combination on each. The crystal is chipped around the edges, but clean. The silver case is engraved Hamilton on front and back bezels. The reverse bezel also appears to be a pop-off style, but does not come loose. The gold toned movement is marked "Elgin Nat`l Watch Co./ 1303083/ Elgin Ill." This watch is apparently a converted style, whereby someone took the 1884 Elgin mechanism (originally produced for a complete hunter case) and refitted it in a double-open Hamilton case. The Elgin movement features 7 jewels, a gilt finish, and both a top plate and barrel bridge. Stem wind, lever set. The mechanism is in fine working condition, and the case is interesting but could use a new crystal. A fine, affordable movement that would be a great candidate for refitting in a traditional case.
