Eagle with wings outstretched with shield and arrows, top; Indian in headdress in oval, left. "The Bearer is holder of one share of one dollar in the Labour & Property Stock of the Phalanx..." Fourierism was a 19th century social reform system that proposed organizing society into small, self-sustaining communal groups. There was a Phalanx community in Sangamon County that practiced this philosophy until 1848, when it became financially embarrassed. Perhaps this Kane County association was a similar entity. This note sold in 1987 for $600, an extraordinary amount of money for an obsolete note at that time. The Fox River flows right through Aurora, the Schingoethe's home town. F-VF, with a few pinholes and very minor foxing.
