IDENTITY PAPERS FOR A GUARD AT SACHSENHAUSEN AND THE V-ROCKET FACTORIES
Wehrpass issued to 37 year old Wilhelm Schroter at Sangerhausen on Apr. 1, 1937. In late 1939, Schroter served in a flugmelde regiment, likely as an aircraft spotter. However, with manpower shortages being felt due to attrition, on Sep. 1, 1944 he was pressed into service by the SS to serve as a guard at Mittelbau-Dora, the underground tunnels where slave labor from Buchenwald was used to construct V-1 and V-2 rockets...at the cost of 20,000 lives. The last entry in his service record shows Schroter being sent to Sachsenhausen where he signs on on Jan. 1, 1945. Also present is his signed Apr. 1, 1943 declaration concerning reporting sabotage. On Apr. 20-21, the camp's SS staff ordered 33,000 inmates on a forced march northeast. Most of the prisoners were physically exhausted and thousands did not survive this death march; those who collapsed en route were shot by the SS. On Apr. 22, the camp's remaining 3,000 inmates, including 1,400 women were liberated by the Red Army and the Polish Army's 2nd Infantry Division.
