The identification for this Colt revolver comes from the Descriptive Roll of Companies A, D, E, G, H, K, L, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry. A photo static copy of these rolls accompany the revolver which clearly list this revolver SN 65460 as assigned to Private James W. Baxter, Company E. Standard .44 cal Colt Model 1860 Army revolver, 6-shot rebated cylinder, iron frame, brass trigger guard and walnut grip. All serial numbers match on metal parts. Baxter enlisted February 6, 1864 and was mustered out with Co. M, 3rd Regiment Provisional Cavalry on October 31, 1865. The 22nd Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry was a consolidated unit formed of the Ringgold Cavalry and a battalion of cavalry called out for the invasion of Pennsylvania in 1863. This unit’s battle service includes; Martinsburg, Maryland Heights, Snicker’s Gap, Cedar Creek, New Market, Kernstown, and Fishers Hill among others. CONDITION: Very Good. Metal parts were lightly cleaned and now retain a light grey patina with some heavy pitting and a mottled appearance overall. The revolver is mechanically operational, bore is dark, brass trigger guard uncleaned with nice patina, and grips worn with a minor chip at the toe and a couple of notches incised. A very respectable Colt Army revolver identified to a Civil War cavalry trooper. 4-49686 CW
