<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899>Suitcase-like satchel for carrying personal belongings popular during the Civil War period through the 1870s. Offered is a colorful, inexpensive wool bag with cotton lining, in stylized red, blue, green, orange and black design, 14½"x13½", with semicircular fabric covered handle of the same design extending from end to end with 2½" gutta percha bottom fastened with brass lock and hook in center of flap and two hooks at either end. Key lacking. Flap is 2/3 detached from bag along seam; light wear near bottom; 3" lining along one side of flap repaired with brown thread; o/w in good condition. This carpetbag was owned by <b>Captain Humphrey H. Buttrick</b>, 59th MA Volunteer Infantry. Stenciled on inner flap is his name and rank as “<i>LT. H. H. Buttrick / 59th MS</i> [sic]. <i>Inf.</i>” in two lines. Born in Concord, the 35 year-old Mason was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in 1861, Co. G, the Concord Artillery, 5th Regt MA, later recommissioned in the 59th. Having served in The Wilderness campaign, Spotsylvania, North Ann [River], Cold Harbor, ‘The Crater’ battle, Poplar Grove Church and the siege at Petersburg, Capt. Buttrick was discharged on Jan 14, 1865 for disability.
