(Riga 1879-1970 Stuttgart) Abstract Composition, 1950, unique, hand-woven tapestry, various yarns, linen lining, 148 x 112 cm (not including fringe), (PM). Provenance: German Private Collection. Ida Kerkovius' attitude towards questions regarding potential influences on her work is generally marked by a certain restraint and resistance. A subtle connection with the views of Adolf Hölzel is one of the few things she is prepared to countenance ... Even so, her work shows influences that go beyond Hölzel, for instance her stay at the Bauhaus during the period between 1920 and 1923. The works produced in that period may not be systematic in character, but become evident in a clearer, more acute awareness of compositional elements and strategies... Ida Kerkovius was fully involved in the two-fold training - artistic and technical - provided by the Bauhaus, studying form with Itten, Klee, Kandinsky and taking part in a weaving workshop. It is significant that in their compositions, Ida Kerkovius' tapestry designs as well as the tapestries themselves show a noticeable lack of depth. Their patterns are based on planes, and much of their great attraction derives from their glowing colours.
