Granted by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and the President of the United States of America and approved by the Secretary of the Interior under the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 to “Kar hap lee Kish or James Miles, an Indian residing on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation has been allotted the following-described land, viz: The South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section twenty-four and the East half of the North West quarter of Section twenty-five in Township thirty-six North of Range three West of Boise Meridian in Idaho, containing one hundred and twenty acres.” A rare document giving a land patent to a Native American. Coming with the patent was American citizenship and the right to vote, although those things are not mentioned in the patent. Signed by Cleveland, M. McKean, Secretary, and L. I. C. Lamar, Recorder of the General Land Office, on 13 June 1895. Recorded in vol. 40, page 246. Preserved under plexiglas that measures 16.25 by 20.” The document itself measures 11.50 by 17.75.” A few spots of foxing, otherwise in great condition.
