For someone with zero literary aspirations, Ian Fleming managed to create the most influential spy character of all time, and all with such apparent ease. From the outset the novels were criticised for being, as The New Statesman’s critic reviewed them, a litany of “sex, snobbery and sadism - without doubt the nastiest book I have ever read”. His wife called them “cheap pornography”. Even Fleming referred to his debut, 1953’s Casino Royale as an “oafish opus”. Yet they were all best-sellers - regardless of their wavering quality. The revelation that President Kennedy loved them made Fleming the biggest-selling crime writer in the US. Even The New Statesman begrudgingly acknowledged that Fleming had created “a social phenomenon of some importance”, not least a reinvention of the very British regard for the very British literary everyman heroes of the pre-war era, from Bulldog Drummond to Richard Hannay. But, with banking in the family, Fleming knew how to follow the money regardless. No great fan of the movies – Fleming only lived to see the first two, and had wanted David Niven or Roger Moore for the role – he nevertheless appreciated their influence, and is said to have in part modeled his later literary portrayal of Bond around Sean Connery’s performance. Likewise he struck a canny deal with an investment company by selling them the rights to 51% of all future royalties for his books for a then sizable £100,000, conscious that much of his income would come less from books as the box office. All items are available for your examination prior to bidding by appointment only. Your bidding will signify that you have examined the items as fully as desired, or that you have chosen not to examine them. 2. The auctioneer will be the final judge as to who is the succesful bidder. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer shall at his discretion decide whether or not to reopen the bidding. If an item is withdrawn from auction it will be offered again at the auctioneers discretion. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the succesful bidder at the fall of the auctioneers hammer. The purchaser shall assume full responsibility for the lot purchased once title has passed. All lots in the catalogue are subject to a reserve, of which the amount is confidental between Kristen Leighs auctions ltd and the consigner. We reserve the right to bid up to the amount of reserve by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot, or bid in response to other bidders.
POSTAGE:
3.The auction house has at any time the right to void the sale before any lots are shipped and will refund all monies paid within a reasonable amount of time normally within 2 weeks
3a. Invoices will be sent to the winning bidder within 5 days (for postage) of the close of the auction. And payment is due within 3 days of the invoice being sent. Payment is by Bank transfer only, and can be made in some cases via card through a Western union agent. If paying via Western union you will be given a MTCN (please supply this information for us to identify your payment). We insist of a reference of invoice number or name to be given to your bank of where the payment is coming from to make it easier for us to identify the payment. We also insist full payment must be made including covering all fees charged by bank and the amount on the invoice reaching us in full.
4. Invoices for postage will incur a bank fee on our end to be covered by the winning bidder of 10 Great British pounds for buyers outside of the UK.
SHIPPING.
A sihipping quote is provided by Kristen Leighs auctions ltd on invoices and automatically includes tracking, which can be tracked on your end to your address. Insurance isn't included and can be added at an extra cost by contacting us. Please note glass in frames isn't covered by insurance and can be replaced for perspex if need be.
4. In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these terms and conditions. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer or screen indicates sold. The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item he/she is bidding. If unsure the bidder should inquire or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder.
All autographed lots (Excluding signed photos) over the value of £150 will include a third party certificate of authenticity. A certificate of authenticity is an opinion expressed by a company as to it being genuine. We welcome all bidders to do their own research before bidding, and to ask questions before bidding as the winner of a lot will enter into a legally binding contract to pay for the lot. As in condition of a lot, we give no opinions, and items are sold as seen.
