I feel like a kind of wandering Jew.... Unusu
I feel like a kind of wandering Jew.... Unusually expressive letter of a young man travelling through Europe, Heidelberg, May 7, no year but c. 1860, 4 pp., 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 . Detailing his journey from Paris through Belgium and into Germany, he talks of his life as a solitary traveler. "...We poor wanderers on the face of the Earth do not allow such thoughts [of marriage] to eat into our heads, though we naturally seek to keep the society of those who are agreeable enough to make us forget our hard lots for a time...Bruges [Belgium] was very rich & prosperous at one time...It has now dwindled down to 51,000, a third of which are beggars. As all the original houses are standing you may imagine what the state of house-rents is - rather low. I could not keep thinking whether Baltimore might not find itself in the same sad condition one of these days...After much journeying we reached this place...a very pretty university town, the chief monument is a magnificent old ruined castle, one of the finest in the world...I feel like a kind of wandering Jew when I think of the travel that is before me...." Darkly penned, but on thin tan paper with much show-through, one corner lacking affecting a few words, else fine. With typescript.
