I & H Sorby – Custer Battlefield Dag
Classic circa 1850 Dag, 11” x 2 1/4”
Description from page 46 of Early Knives & Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier, by John Baldwin, as follows:
“I & H Sorby Dag, 11 x 2 1/4 IN. CIRCA 1850. (By Affidavits) A Newark, New Jersey, arms and antique dealer who focused on the purchase of wealthy estates, originally secured this dag from an old New Jersey family. The dag was collected with the family history documented with letters and verbal communication. This dag was retrieved from the Custer battlefield in the late 1800s by a member of the family who had been assigned military duty in that area. The oak handle, deteriorating, was tied back together and since has received wood preservatives. The blade is the typical I & H Sorby trade blade. The Oak handle whose wood probably came from an oak wagon board is Indian made in the northern tradition of a canoe paddle handle. This art feature occurred in the upper Great Lakes and West region. Imagine the mystique and intrigue surrounding this historically significant battlefield artifact.”
