Hunters Point Trading is a rare token because there were few in circulation.
The original store was built by Sam Day around 1900 in a relatively remote and scenic area. Bob Nichols rebuilt the store in 1940. It was a small post where we dealt for vegetal dye rugs, jewelry, and piñons. One owner, Jack Powell, worked with Navajo sandcast silversmiths, many of whom were well known in the trade. The primary outlets for the area silversmiths were Tribe-owned NACE (Navajo Arts & Crafts Enterprise) in nearby Window Rock and, later, Russell Lindgren on the highway between Window Rock and Gallup. The store always had nice small vegetal dye rugs. The store closed in 1989.
