Hunt, Freeman [editor]. HUNT’S MERCHANTS’ MAGAZINE AND COMMERCIAL REVIEW. Vols. 35 (July to December 1856), 36 (January to June 1857), 37 (July to December 1857) and 39 (July to December 1858). New York. Vol. 35: viii, 17-784 pages. Vol. 36: viii, 17-784 pages; two finely engraved portrait plates with tissue guards. Vol. 37: finely engraved frontispiece of Joseph May, with tissue guard; viii, 17-792 pages. Vol. 39: finely engraved frontispiece of William Pepperrell, with tissue guard; viii, 17-776 pages. Four volumes. 8vo, contemporary matching brown half morocco with mottled sides; spines with four raised bands, ruled in blind and lettered in gilt; G. ROGERS, JR. impressed in gilt at base of each spine. Moderate wear to bindings, all of which are sound; spotting to extremities. Very good or better. Important volumes of an underappreciated 19th-century resource for numismatists. Published at a pivotal period for the United States Mint (whose activities are closely followed in these pages), Hunt’s Merchants’ Magazine made available to its readers information on the production of coinage, figures on gold mining and refining, banknote values, counterfeiting, assays and deposits of gold bullion with the U.S. Assay Office, economics and trade. The publication includes regular updates on the production of the various denominations of U.S. coins, and much information on the activities of the Assay Office. Gold mining in California is a regular topic, as is the value of banknotes and the solvency of the issuing bodies. Even Japanese coins are touched upon. The newly introduced small cents are discussed in Vol. 37. These volumes are also important for the inclusion of “Money,” by H.C. Carey and chapters of Organization of Debt into Currency by Charles Holt Carroll. Rarely offered.
