This is a large, framed oil painting on canvas by the hand of Emil Pap (1884-?), the noted Hungarian painter. Frame measures 38" by 48" by 3" and exposed canvas measures 28.5" by 38.5". Professionally mounted in an ornate, gilt wood frame with paper backing. Depicted is a lovely woman in yellow slip, standing before her dressing mirror that's lit by an open window at the opposite end of the room. Pap has employed a lovely use of light and shadow here. Signed "Pap Emil" by the artist in the lower left corner. Precise age is unknown, but it must date from no later than the early/mid 20th century.

Additional images forwarded upon request.

Pap was born in Szolnok Hungary and later moved to Budapest where he studied at the Academy. He specialized in society portrait commissions but also painted a large number of genre scenes. As with this work, he is known for magnificent use of light and shade to create deep contrast. Though there is little known of his life, today he is recognized as one of the most important Hunganrian born painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. His works appear regularly at auction throughout Europe.
