Humboldt Count,NV - c1870-1875 - Mule Train Waits for the Central Pacific Railroad Photograph :
This stereograph depicting a mule team waiting for the Central Pacific Railroad, measures 7”x 3 1/2”, has an orange single matte, high contrast, and focus is good. Minor wear on the upper right corner of the matte, but overall great condition. The photographer is identified as John James Reilly. This photo was produced when Reilly worked in Marysville, California, 1879-86. The right side of the matte reads “Views of American Scenery”. The matte reads that the photo is of the “Sulphur Mining Mule Team, C.P.R.R. Cal.”, but the photo not taken in Humboldt County, California. The vegetation and topography scream Nevada. In addition, sulfur mining was somewhat successful in Humboldt County, Nevada throughout the 1870s. In the photograph a twelve mule team waits for the CP RR. Four men pose for the photo. The matte tells us that the wagon is from a sulphur mining operation. Sulphur mining began in Humboldt County c. 1869.
