Rare original 5 x 4 photograph of Federal prosecutor Hugh T. Taggart, Esq. at “Dickey’s” famous tavern/inn in Great Falls, Virginia. Taggart was a leading federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., including in the trial of Guiteau for the assassination of President Garfield. He served as President of the Bar Association for the District of Columbia. The photograph of Taggart (distinguished with a white mustache, appearing front and center on the porch) is captioned on the reverse in contemporary ink: "'Dickey’s' famous cabin at Great Falls, VA, Hugh T. Taggart Esq. on porch." This was also known as 'Dickeys Inn' at Matildaville—now Great Falls, Virginia. For about 165 years this inn stood near the Great Falls, an original part of the vanished canal town of Matildaville, established in 1790. The tavern/inn was a place of refreshment for canal boat runners and visitors, including U.S. Presidents from George Washington to Theodore Roosevelt. In fine condition, with a central crease.
