LADY MARY BRUCE, DUCHESS OF RICHMOND
signed and dated [1770] lower right; inscribed on reverse

27 by 22cm., 10.75 by 8.75in.
Lady Mary Bruce (c.1737-1796) was the daughter of Charles Bruce, Earl of Elgin
and Aylesbury and Caroline Campbell. She was married in 1757 to Charles Lennox
(1734-1806), 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, whose remarkable political career
saw him support the colonists in the prelude to the American War of Independence
and later advocate a policy of concession in Ireland, coining the much-repeated
phrase, "a union of hearts". The couple resided at the family seat, Goodwood
House, Chichester, where hangs another portrait of Lady Mary painted by
Gainsborough.
