Another version of this work, almost identical except unsigned, is in the
National Portrait Collection, London (NPG 246). Ann or Anna Chambers (1707-1777)
was the wife of statesman Richard Grenville-Temple, 2nd Earl Temple. She was
also a poet, and had a single small volume of her Poems printed at the
Strawberry Hill Press in 1764, with a preface by Horace Walpole. Allen Ramsay
(1713-1784) also painted her portrait in 1760 (Chevening House, Kent), whilst
Sir Joshua Reynolds painted her husband’s portrait, which was later engraved.
