A fabulous display piece! Manufactured during the time known as the Hellenistic Period -- when most of the area around the Mediterranean Sea was under the influence of the Greek civilization, between the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. and the annexation of the Greek peninsula and islands by Rome in 146 B.C. Used by Greek merchants in the transportation of olive oil and wine, or for the storage of water upon the transport ships, these vessels were placed in the storage hold of ships upon a fine layer of sand used to keep them in place. Large rounded base, long thin neck and twin handles, made from light clay with almost white slip upon the exterior, rim with distinct cap. 27"L x 10-1/2"D (standing 36" when mounted in included stand), intact and near-choice with minor rim chipping. Ex-private Luxembourg Collection. These vessels are always most desirable and this one is about as nice as they come!
