Huge 1872 Horace Greeley Ferrotype Absolutely Awesome, Huge 1872 Horace Greeley Ferrotype.
Absolutely Awesome, Huge 1872 Horace Greeley Ferrotype. This choice beauty from the Joe Brown Collection is particularly noteworthy because Greeley items are so coveted (and expensive!). Interestingly, it has a lapel stud back (as made) rather than the expected pin (although political studs appeared in 1868, they were rarely used until the 1880s). While this piece is, of course, unlisted, Sullivan does picture a Schuyler Colfax version from 1868 (SC 1868-2), suggesting that once these may possibly have existed for as many as eight 1868 and 1872 candidates. A quick perusal of the Sullivan book discloses that, with the sole exception of the large 1864 Lincoln item (and its McClellan mate) this superb Greeley is actually tied for the largest-size ferrotype image manufactured for ANY candidate during the 1860-1888 lifespan of these campaign items. Definitely one of the prize items from the Joe Brown Collection, it should inspire great bidder interest! Diameter 29mm.
