Huerfano County,CO - c1885 - Spanish Peaks from Veta Mountain Photograph :
South Central Colorado’s prominent landmark mountains. Cabinet card measures 6 1/2”x 4 1/8”, beige single matte 7”x 4 1/2”, high to medium contrast—suffers from some yellowing, and the focus is good. Minor wear on the corners of the matte. Photographer not identified. This photo is likely by William H. Jackson. On the reverse of the matte, “Jackson Photo Party” is written in pencil. Additionally, the cabinet card format is consistent with Jackson’s Rocky Mountain Scenery series. Also, the man on the right of the photo resembles Jackson. In this photo three men, most likely the Jackson Photo Team, sit atop Vera Mountain and West Spanish Peak stands in the background. West Spanish Peak, with an elevation of 13,626 feet, is located south of La Veta. The Spanish Peaks have long been a landmark for Native Americans, European explorers, and prospectors. In 1876 a small gold mining boom occurred in the area. No. 1082.
