The Hudson River painters comprised the first coherent school of American art that helped shape the mythos of the American landscape. Landscape painting was the prevalent genre of the 19th century American Art. With roots in European Romanticism, the Hudson River painters set out to define a distinct vision of American art. They depicted a New World wilderness with a sense of awe for its majestic natural resources and a feeling of optimism for the huge potential it held. Through their pure depictions of nature, their work was believed to be an agent of moral and spiritual transformation. The painting "West Point" displays many of the fine characteristics of Hudson River School Art (1835-1870). West Point, New York was a popular painting venue for many of the artists. The Natural Beauty of the Terrain with its Lakes, Hills and foliage made for very picturesque landscape compositions. This particular painting displays Luminist qualities in the distant background mountains and glassy water in the foreground. Measuring 14" x 22" canvas alone, 23.25" x 31.25" in the fine giltwood frame, the painting is in Excellent Condition. Please view all pictures, serious inquiries are welcome!
