American chemist and inventor (1853–1927) best known for several innovations related to explosives, including smokeless gunpowder. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, March 9, 1900. Letter to Professor Monroe. In full: “I understand that General Rodman was the first to make powder grains with perforations, with a view to producing progressive combustion. I am desirous of learning the particulars of what he did and the dates. If you could give me any information on the subject, I should be very much obliged. I find a man by the name of Wierd patented a multi-perforated grain in 1883. Do you know anyone who produced, patented or published multi-perforated grains, or grains with a single perforation, earlier than that date?” In good condition, with two horizontal folds, with a partial separation through the fold through signature, scattered creases and wrinkles, mounting remnants to reverse, small tear to top edge, and several edge tears. Important correspondence in regards to the development of explosives.
