This is a Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. dag knife made by John and Henry Sorby, Sheffield, England in circa 1827-1850. The piece was traded to the Northern Plains Native American Indians. The dag (dagger or knife) has an eight sided quarter sawn oak handle with twisted sheet metal hilt. The blade is marked "IH" inside a "sawtoothed" border circa 1827-1850. John Sorby made and sold dag blades to the Hudson Bay Co. to 1790-1850. From 1790-1827 his blade hallmark was "I.Sorby." His son Henry Sorby joined him in the business in 1827 at which time the blade stamp changed to, "I.H. Sorby" or "I.H." as the blade is marked. These blades are extremely rare and hardly ever seen outside a museum. The sheath recovered with this dag (from the same period 1800-1850) American bowie knife sheath that has been cut down to fit the blade and shows a cross and dot tooled pattern. The piece is a museum quality collectible and comes with the described provenance paper. The knife shows overall well preserved good condition and is an excellent rare collectible. Measures
