This is an excellent Montreal Hudson Bay Fur Co. signed German silver early double sided mirror gorget from circa 1680-1820. The piece is hallmarked, “MONTREAL”, “HBCo” and twice “WS”. The piece is done by renowned silversmith, William Sylvester circa 1680-1820. William Sylvester was noted in the American Fur Company papers as providing “silverwork” according to the book “Silver In The Fur Trade 1680-1820” by Martha Wilson Hamilton. The American Fur Co. was associated with Hudson’s Bay Fur Co. and the North West Fur Trade Co. The piece is displayed on an early presentation clothe collar with embroidered stars. The mirror gorget shows an excellent framed edge with one side having the reflective surgace and the other showing the Hudson Bay Fur Co. seal marked, “Pro Pelle Cutem (translating, “a skin for a skin” and was adopted by the HBC circa 1670). The piece is in very good museum quality condition for its age. Mirror gorget is 4 7/8”x5 7/8”. Collar is 19”x14” (as pictured). This is displayed in a glass top black display box that is 14.25”x20.25” and 1.25” thick. Exceedingly rare.
