<B>Snuff Palette</B></I><BR>Huari/Tiwanaku<BR>A.D. 500 - 1100<BR>Gray slate with red inclusions, Weight 344 grams<BR>Height 7 in. Width 3 15/16 in.<BR><BR>The complexity of the shaped snuff palette is closest in format, style, and motifs to those in examples related to Huari and late Tiwanaku contexts. While most of those are wood, a few of these stone examples do exist. From an axe-shaped handle a rectangular holder extends, the center roughly hollowed out and the borders covered with loosely incised geometric patterns. A slightly-raised band at the outer edge has an incised fret design. On this stand two outward-facing profile animals with squared-off heads and looped tails into which something could have been tied. The visual effect is enhanced by rich red mineral inclusions in the gray slate.
