<B>Standing Female Figure</B></I><BR>Huari<BR>A.D. 500 - 750<BR>Polychrome ceramic<BR>Height 8 1/2in. Width 21/2in.<BR><BR>The generally tubular figure stands on short legs with flanged feet, with painted arms emerging from knobbed shoulders and terminating in hands with the splayed fingers meeting at the stomach. Facial features and ears are defined in low relief, the eyes then painted open wide. Tri-colored streamers flow down each cheek from the eyes. A crescent-shaped gorget is painted on. The esteem in which the figure was held anciently is indicated by repairs reattaching the head using a series of drilled holes and intricate lashing, of which much of the original cord remains.
