Huari Pile Weave Band
Pile Weave Band ("Jaguar Tail" Costume Component)
Middle Horizon, Huari-related (?)
A.D. 500 - 800
Camelid fibers, cotton
Length 20 ½ in. Width 5 7/16 in.

The uncertain period and cultural attribution for this unusual piece is based on its weaving technique, which was developed at Tiwanaku and flourished under the expansionist Huari. The three-dimensional pile texture, the irregular shape, and the patterning of this textile inevitably suggest the tail section of a jaguar pelt. Since it is finished and bordered all around, the textile constitutes a complete unit. This suggests that it may have been a component of a costume. The pile-textured "pelt" has an off-white ground with two colors of rich brown forming the pelage. A few small accents of old rose connect this center portion harmoniously with the old rose bordering band. Other than a few minor frayed spots, the condition is very good.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, 9 June 2003, lot 5123, p.33

Important
