High-ranking Chinese official (1915–1989) who served as the general secretary of the Communist Party from 1982 to 1987. Hu’s promotion of freedom of speech and press greatly influenced the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Glossy 7 x 5 photo, signed by Hu Yaobang and Holger Borner on the reverse in blue ballpoint and blue ink respectfully, with each adding a 1985 date. Hu adds, “1985. 5.22,” and Borner adds, “6.5.85.” In fine condition, with a few small spots of toning to reverse of photo and minor brushing to Borner’s signature. At the time this photo was signed, Germany was China's number one European trade partner: the total value of bilateral trade between the two countries that year exceeded three billion. This was 38.3% more than the previous year and more than eleven times greater than in 1972, the year they established diplomatic relations.
