Index.<BR><BR>Original maroon cloth with titles in gilt on the spine and two gilt rules on the front board of each volume. Top edges gilt. Edges untrimmed. Corners bumped. Light shelf wear to edges of boards. Light toning to the preliminary pages. Contents sound and square. Memorial book plate on the inside front pastedown of each volume. Small inked date stamps on the front and back pastedowns. Small library de-acquisition stamp over memorial book plate. Small historical society blind stamp on the title page of each volume. A faint small faded area near the base of the spine of each volume possibly indicating a removed library stamp. All things considered, a handsome set in very good condition.<BR><BR>General Oliver Otis Howard was prominent in many important battles of the Civil War. He was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his action at the battle of Fair Oaks. It was in that battle that he sustained wounds to his right arm that was subsequently amputated.
