Australian pharmacologist and pathologist (1898–1968) who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Sir Ernst Chain and Sir Alexander Fleming for his role in the development of penicillin. ALS signed “H. W. Florey,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, University of Oxford letterhead, August 5, 1948. Letter to Dr. Charles Schnall in Philadelphia, in part: "I have the very happiest memories of your kindness in Guadalcanal & Hawaii. It was a great pleasure to see you again at Atlantic City. I'm glad to hear your work is going well—I'm very interested to see your clarification of disease—quite useful but it reminds me of a Dean of one of your southern medical schools who complained, 'You fellows are a great nuisance for when a patient comes in he is given sulfa drugs for 2 days, if he is then not better he is given penicillin for 2 days, & if he is then not better he is examined.'" In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Florey's hand, incorporating his surname on the flap.
