A pair of prototype pants created during pre-production for Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). Developed by the film’s costume department, this test garment was part of the creative experimentation process that defined the quirky, colorful aesthetic of Whoville.
The pants feature a bold horizontal and vertical striped pattern in shades of royal blue, black, gray, and white, constructed from a soft, stretch-knit fabric with overlock-stitched seams typical of studio mock-ups. Their exaggerated proportions and mix of stripe directions reflect the costume team’s exploration of shapes and visual rhythm, helping to establish the distinctively offbeat Whoville style.
Designed under the direction of Academy Award–nominated costume designer Rita Ryack, these early prototypes embody the imaginative craftsmanship behind the film’s Academy Award–winning world of fantastical fashion. While never seen onscreen, pieces like this were vital to defining the film’s whimsical visual identity and the unique charm of its characters.

The item(s) may exhibit varying levels of wear and studio distressing, as detailed in the listing images that provide an accurate representation of the condition. All inner wardrobe tags have been photographed to offer insight into size and use. If tags are absent from the photographs, it indicates that they were removed by the studio, and no size information is available.
