A collection of “Whoville Wholiday News” prop newspaper fragments and decorative ribbons used as set dressing in the Mt. Crumpit dump and the Grinch’s cave from Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Universal Pictures, 2000).
These original production-made pieces include several custom-printed “Whoville” newspaper clippings featuring tongue-in-cheek headlines such as “Whobilation Plans Are Finally in Place,” “Farfingle’s Super Christmas Sale,” and “Whooperman’s Bakery – All Christmas Cakes on Sale.” Also included are two colorful ribbons, one metallic gold and one tartan plaid, designed to represent discarded holiday decorations among the Grinch’s mountain of garbage.
Each piece was intentionally aged, wrinkled, and weathered by the film’s art department to create the look of genuine Whoville refuse, a vital part of the detailed world-building that transformed the Universal backlot into the topsy-turvy town of Whoville and the Grinch’s cluttered lair atop Mt. Crumpit.
An instantly recognizable example of the Oscar®-winning production design that helped bring Dr. Seuss’s world to life, these set-used newspaper props offer a playful glimpse into the over-the-top consumerism that fueled Whoville’s Christmas spirit and the Grinch’s disdain for it.
