A collection of original “Whoville Gazette” newspaper fragments used as set dressing in the Mt. Crumpit landfill and the Grinch’s cave in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Universal Pictures, 2000).
These whimsical paper scraps were custom-printed by the production’s art department, designed with nonsensical Seussian advertisements and holiday-themed articles, such as “FarFingle’s Coupon Savings Sale,” “Whooperman’s Bakery Christmas Cakes,” and “All Whoville Shops Open Early.” Each piece features aged, wrinkled, and torn detailing applied by the set decorators to create the authentic look of discarded Whoville trash, perfectly suited for the cluttered chaos of the Grinch’s mountain hideaway.
Used in scenes set around the Mt. Crumpit dump, where the Grinch hoarded the castoffs of Whoville, these production-made props highlight the incredible attention to detail that brought the film’s world to life. Every newspaper scrap helped build the illusion of a bustling, consumer-driven Whoville and the literal garbage heap that fueled the Grinch’s disdain for Christmas cheer.
An excellent example of Ron Howard’s team’s meticulous world-building, these screen-used Whoville newspapers are a rare and charming artifact from one of the most beloved holiday films of all time.
