An original “Whoville Worker” preproduction costume coverall created by the costume department during the design development phase of Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000).
Constructed of mustard-brown cotton fabric, this utilitarian-style coverall features short sleeves, front utility pockets, and a cinched waist with functional back pocket, a design reflecting the everyday Whos who keep Whoville bustling with energy and cheer. This piece was part of the costume design testing process, as the production’s wardrobe team explored fabrics, cuts, and tones to define the unique aesthetic of Whoville’s working-class residents.
Under the creative leadership of costume designer Rita Ryack, the film’s wardrobe team built hundreds of costumes, each hand-finished to blend Seussian whimsy with a sense of believability. This prototype garment showcases the early design experimentation that helped shape the look of Whoville’s vibrant community, contributing to the film’s Academy Award® for Best Makeup and its enduring visual charm.
A rare piece from the behind-the-scenes artistry that brought Dr. Seuss’s fantastical world to life.

The item(s) may exhibit varying levels of wear and studio distressing, as detailed in the listing images that provide an accurate representation of the condition. All inner wardrobe tags have been photographed to offer insight into size and use. If tags are absent from the photographs, it indicates that they were removed by the studio, and no size information is available.
