A rare Whoville nose prosthetic appliance custom-made for actor Jim Meskimen in his role as Officer Wholihan in Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Universal Pictures, 2000). This original production-made prosthetic represents the extraordinary craftsmanship behind the film’s Academy Award®-winning makeup design.
The appliance, crafted from foam latex, rests on a clear life cast of Meskimen’s face, measuring approximately 11.75" x 10.5". The soft, flesh-toned piece features the distinct upturned “Who” nasal flair that became a hallmark of Whoville’s eccentric and endearing residents. Markings on the back include handwritten production notations referencing the actor, underscoring its authenticity as a working effects piece.
Designed and applied by legendary makeup artist Rick Baker and his team, each Whoville prosthetic was painstakingly sculpted and color-matched to the actor’s complexion, ensuring seamless integration on screen. This example provides a fascinating glimpse into the process that transformed ordinary actors into the fantastical citizens of Whoville.
An exceptional display piece from the groundbreaking holiday classic, this Officer Wholihan nose appliance is a true artifact of the film’s Oscar®-winning artistry and whimsical Seussian world-building.
