A rare set of two double-sided Japanese promotional flyers created for the theatrical release of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), starring Jim Carrey and directed by Ron Howard. These original flyers were distributed in cinemas across Japan to advertise the film’s December 2000 premiere, part of Universal Pictures’ global holiday marketing campaign.
Each flyer, measuring 10" x 7", is printed on glossy paper and features distinct designs tailored to the Japanese audience. One design highlights Cindy Lou Who and Max the dog with wintery blue tones and promotional copy declaring “The world’s biggest Christmas movie event!” and “This year, will Christmas come?” The reverse side features film information and a red AMC theater release banner, marking its exclusive theatrical run.
The second flyer takes a humorous approach, using sports imagery with the Grinch’s unmistakable green, furry limbs replacing those of athletes, a clever, localized ad promoting the film’s mischievous energy and playful tone. The reverse displays the now-iconic key art of the Grinch’s hand dangling a red ornament, along with the Japanese title “グリンチ” (Grinch).
This set offers a charming glimpse into international film marketing and stands as a rare and colorful collectible from the Japanese release of Ron Howard’s beloved Christmas classic.
