Minor stains and slight loss of several letters at several folds. Very good copy overall. First edition. A political campaign broadside which prints the text of Houston's lengthy letter of July 24, 1855, expressing his opinions on national politics of the day. Specifically he expresses his views on the "American Order," a secret society which he defends. He also gives his opinions on the leadership of the Catholic Church in the United States, Texas politics, abolition and the Compromise of 1850, immigration laws, and other political issues. "The Present is a momentous epoch in the annals of our country….We have a high and holy duty to perform to our country, and if we, as Americans, cannot maintain and preserve our freedom, is it possible, or ever probable, that we will find a safer depository in the hands of foreigners; or the satellites of the Pope? Is it a crime or even a fault in Americans who seek to resist an influence so adverse to the principles of free government?" Courtesy of Michael Heaston, Austin.

This 2006 March Texas State Historical Association Charity Auction is being held in Austin, TX on February 12 - March 4, 2006.
