“The Humboldt Hotel was constructed in the early 1920s by miner and builder George Wingfield. The five-story hotel was built on exactly the location of another hotel, the El Dorado, that burned to the ground in 1918. So many of the area’s early buildings went up in flames, including the first county courthouse, that Wingfield made every effort to fireproof the building. His efforts paid off, and the community celebrated the Humboldt Hotel’s 50th Anniversary in 1973” [Ref: “HUMBOLDT HOTEL MARKER TO HAVE NEW HOME," Michaelsen, 2011]. Unfortunately, the hotel burnt to the ground in 1975. This lot consists of approximately 5,000 postcards with scalloped edges showing the HOTEL HUMBOLDT of WINNEMUCCA NEVADA. Full color image attributed to Gordon Campbell. The rear of each unused postcard is printed “HUMBOLDT HOTEL & CASINO/ OLDEST & STILL THE BEST/ WINNEMUCCA, NEVADA 89445/ NOTHERN NEVADA’S LARGEST HOTEL/ LOCATED ON I-80 AND U.S. HIGHWAY 95. 100 FIRST/ CLASS AIR COOLED ROOMS.
