A view of 11 men (10 players and a manager) of Troop "A," 6th Cavalry Baseball Team. The photograph measures 8 1/2 x 6" with narrow white border mounted on a 10 x 8" green/brown cardstock backing. Contrast is high, focus is sharp. Slightly worn at the top left and both right corners with several very small spots and stains on the image, otherwise very fine. A small nail hole is present at the bottom center. "Cross, Hot Springs, So. Dak. Scenic Views of the North Western Railway" stamped at the center bottom of the backing. The photographer, William R. Cross, was born in Vermont in 1843. He had a studio in Omaha in 1868, Niobrara c.1875-85, and also in Meade in 1885-88. Active in Hot Springs, S. Dakota, he photographed Plains Indians as well as Deadwood and other Black Hills Mining mining communities. (Ref: Mautz) This image is a classic one, a baseball team and its manager. Handwritten on the reverse are the names of the manager (Capt. Heiberg), each of the players, and the positions they play. The flag of Troop A, 6th Cavalry is displayed by a player in the middle of the back row. Five bats, six gloves, and a ball are also on display. The 6th U.S. Cavalry was organized in Pittsburgh, PA in 1861, and fought in the Civil War at Williamsburg in 1862 and during the Battle of Gettysburg. After the Civil War the 6th fought the Indian Wars, with Cavalryman Lt. Charles Gatewood convincing Geronimo to surrender and return to the reservation, ending a year of murder and terror on the plains. In the Spanish-American War of 1898, the 6th Cavalry rode side-by-side with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders as they won the war in Cuba. (Ref: 6thcavalrymuseum.com)
