American author (1832–1899) best known for his popular Victorian ‘rags to riches’ dime novels. ALS, two pages, 4.5 x 7, January 16, 1890. Letter to Doctor Griffin. In part: “I appreciate your kind offer, but hope I can keep my young minds out of mischief - If they are foolsih I will gladly send them to you.” In very good condition, with partial separations along central horizontal folds, and uniform toning.
