Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1844–1914). Very rare ALS in pencil, signed “H. H. L.,” one page, 8 x 10, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, August 19, 1913. Letter to his Supreme Court law clerk, Harvey W. Jacob, in full: "My Asthma is increasing and Mrs. L. and I will leave from the Hotel about Monday. May wish to stop over at W[ashington] to consult with Ruffin or Dr. Hinde. Locate them for me at their present address and when likely to return to Washington. I may go to see one or other if they are accessible. Do this today & write at once." Lurton adds a brief postscript: "Please deposit enclosed checks to my account." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Lurton was one of only three Confederate veterans to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. At the age of 65, he was the oldest Justice ever appointed to the court for the first time, and he served on the Court from January 1910 until his death in July 1914. Signed handwritten letters from Lurton during his tenure as a U.S. Supreme Court justice are virtually nonexistent.
