Founder and editor of the New York Tribune (1811-1872) who used the power of his newspaper to advocate for a variety of liberal causes, most importantly the call for emancipation of slaves during the Civil War. ALS, one page, 5 x 7.75, February 13, 1859. Letter to C. W. Packard, in part: "My lecturing is tolerable…to those who know and are interested in me personally…Still, I am under bonuses to lecture in your vicinity about March 15th to 20th, and could speak…if it were decidedly required. I think it worth 40 to me to visit and lecture for you, but I am not at all sure it would be worth so much to you." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges and scattered light creasing.
