Horace Greeley Autograph Letter on the Abolition Horace Greeley Autograph Letter on the Abolitionist
Horace Greeley Autograph Letter on the Abolitionist Cassius Clay's Work. Autograph Letter Signed (twice: in full and with initials), 1 page, 7.5" by 10", Monday, March 26, no year [1844]; with integral address leaf, addressed in autograph and bearing the initialed message, "In haste - H.G." To Ephraim George Squier, the editor of the Whig Daily Journal in Hartford, Connecticut. The letter is fine, albeit there is some paper loss, not effecting text, on address leaf. With typed transcription. A quintessential example of the editor and politician who was mid-19th century America's most fiery, and dominant, agitator. In part: "I write to you as most likely to be at home; if Mr. Trumbell or Mr. Stuart were sure to be Hartford I would write to them. My business is general and important. I have just received a Letter from Cassius M. Clay [the American abolitionist and political campaigner] which is calculated to excite a powerful influence on your Election [Henry Clay's presidential bid of 1844]. "You must have it published instantly in all your Religious and the Abolition journals. Do not stand for expense but have it published in the Orthodox journals and the Chr. [Christian] Freemen, with my heading if possible. Be energetic - be wise. See our efficient friends instantly, and take care that every Abolitionist reads this letter this week." He rattles off where he is speaking in the next few days and says he'd speak in Hartford, too, "but that must be given up. I have a sick wife, a young baby, a very arduous newspaper duty, an awful correspondence, and must be here Sunday." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
