Horace Greeley Autograph Letter Signed
Horace Greeley Autograph Letter Signed “Horace Greeley”. One page, 5” x 8”, Washington City, February 16, 1865, to Mrs. Swisshelm Jane Swisshelm . Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was a newspaper editor and politician who helped found the Republican party. This letter is written to long-time friend and business acquaintance Jane Swisshelm (1815-1884), a vocal opponent of slavery who started her own anti-slavery newspaper. Swisshelm was also an early champion of women's rights. This letter was written at a low ebb in Greeley's life while he desperately clung to the remnants of his newspaper and was politically disillusioned with the Republican party. The paper of the letter is slightly toned with age but otherwise it is a legible letter exhibiting the usual creases and a small .5” split in one of the creases, else very good condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
