ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, August 16, 1866. Letter to Gen. Charles G. Halpine, a journalist, author, and soldier. In part: "I send you herewith all of my book that treats of McClellan and Pope's campaigns. I wish you to look at the dates and notes with a critical eye, and see whether McClellan, Franklin, Porter & co. did or did not definitely sacrifice Pope's army. In these matters, hours are vital. Then turn to McClellan at Frederick, with Lee's 'order' in his fist, and see whether Lee ought to have been allowed to get a single corps over the Potomac. Put yourself…in Mc's position with Lee's order before you, and see if you could let Lee escape you without actual treason. Look carefully to dates; I think you can depend on mine for they have been given with care." In fine condition. Excellent Civil War content, commenting on what many saw as George B. McClellan's treason for his failure to pursue Robert E. Lee.
