Manufactured circa 1870s with a total quantity estimated at 2000. Top barrel flat marked "XL DERRINGER" and "PAT. APR. 5, 1870" on the upper left flat. Although the derringer does not bear Hopkins and Allen markings, it does appear in their advertising literature. The patent date is for the Marlin Ejector used on the derringer and for which a royalty was likely paid to Marlin. Iron frame and fitted with bird head grips. Nickel finished and casehardened hammer and trigger.

Very fine. The barrel retains 95% original nickel finish and the frame retains approximately 75% original nickel finish, with the overall balance a smooth gray patina. The hammer and spur trigger retain some traces of faded case colors. The grips are fine with some mild scratches.
