The lot features an early original Kisau Prairie Falcon Kachina doll attributed to the Hopi Native American Indians and dating to circa 1890. The Kisau Prairie Falcon Kachina is one of the rarest, earliest, and most seldom seen figures from the Ancient Hopi times. The entire piece shows the correct early polychrome pigment mineral paints for its early age. The piece features a white case mask with black warrior masks running vertically on cheeks. The piece shows the feathers on the sides instead of the more modern examples showing “tableta” ears. The lines over the chest, arms, and down the back represent the wings. The figure would have carried a yucca whip to whip his victims. The Kachina is wearing a breech clout and women’s belt with a wonderful traditional geometric pattern. One of the most unusual aspects of this authentic Kachina is the religious clouds design over the forehead as most examples show a yellow cross line accenting the forehead. This figure as Fewkes said in 1903 is, “A fading figure of ancient times”. The piece comes with an original tag from an earlier purchase that states the piece is a “Kisa Prairie Falcon Kachina 8” Tall / Hopi / Circa 1890 / Mrs. Alice Krift Collection / No. 14 Wixxx / xa Box 24.” The piece was believed to have been from the early Mrs. Alice Krift or Kuft Collection. The piece also shows an early trade cotton necklace accenting the neck along with half-moon rounded carved feet, forward facing hands with carved fist, and a tanned beaver or other animal hide hanging as part of the breech clout in the rear. The piece shows a few repairs along the arms and mouth, but overall shows the highest of quality and good condition for its very early 19th Century authentic age. This is truly one of the more detailed, well crafted example of one of the more desired and most uncommonly seen Kachina figure, the Kisau Prairie Falcon. Measures 10”H with the feathers by 2.75”W x 2.5”D. Provenance: The piece is from a large Historical Native American Indian artifact and weapons private museum collection in Paris, France. This was purchase many years ago by the current owner for over $1,100. Examples with less provenance and fewer details have sold for over $10,000. The piece was previously valued for $6,720.00, as is shown on the original information card included in the lot.
